Palmer Leads Five England Withdrawals as Tuchel's Squad Shake-Up Continues

England manager Thomas Tuchel has been forced into a major squad reshuffle after five players withdrew from international duty ahead of the Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czech Republic and Croatia. Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Tino Livramento have all pulled out, with Morgan Gibbs-White and James Garner drafted in as replacements. The withdrawals represent a significant blow to Tuchel's plans as he seeks to build momentum in the competition.

Palmer's absence is particularly notable given his recent recall to the squad. The Chelsea forward was left out of Tuchel's World Cup squad in the summer but earned a second chance after an impressive start to the season, scoring four goals in seven games. However, he played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea's defeat to Brentford before withdrawing, raising questions about his fitness and whether he can cement a regular role under Tuchel.

Tuchel had challenged Palmer to prove himself, saying: "Cole needs to show these kinds of numbers and performances to get his shirt and justify the nomination." The German coach also praised Gibbs-White, who he said "ended the season very strongly and was the key player for Forest to not be relegated." The withdrawals of Rice, Mainoo, Rashford and Livramento further deplete a squad already navigating a transitional phase.

Palmer had spoken optimistically about his fitness after an injury-hit 2025-26 campaign, telling Sky Sports: "Physically I feel good, probably the best I've felt in ages." Yet his withdrawal suggests lingering concerns. With Gibbs-White and Garner now in the fold, Tuchel will hope the new arrivals can seize their opportunity as England aim to establish themselves in the Nations League.
