La Liga's opening weekend has been thrown into chaos after a fungal outbreak on the pitch at Estadio de Balaidos forced the postponement of Sunday's fixture between Celta Vigo and Osasuna. The match, originally set for August 16, will now be played on August 27, a decision that has sparked outrage from the visiting club.

Celta Vigo had requested a delay after unseasonably warm temperatures in late July — peaking at 36°C — followed by persistent highs in the mid-20s created ideal conditions for the fungus to spread across the playing surface. League inspectors initially approved the turf on Wednesday, but further deterioration led to the last-minute change.

Osasuna issued a scathing statement, accusing the league of a lack of 'foresight and professionalism.' They claimed both clubs had agreed to play the match in September during the international break, a proposal that was allegedly ignored by La Liga and the Spanish FA. The club also noted the unfairness of rescheduling just 48 hours before their scheduled flight to Vigo.

The incident casts a shadow over Balaidos, which is undergoing renovations and is slated to be one of 11 Spanish venues for the 2030 World Cup.
