Ipswich Town Launches Investigation into Racist Abuse of Abdul Fatawu

Ipswich Town have launched an investigation after forward Abdul Fatawu was subjected to racist abuse online. The club released a statement on social media saying they were aware of the abuse and described it as "completely unacceptable." The incident occurred following Ipswich's 1-0 defeat to Everton on Saturday, a match in which the 22-year-old Ghanaian winger was sent off after receiving two yellow cards.

The club confirmed they are working with the Premier League and relevant authorities to identify those responsible. "We will continue to offer Abdul our full support," the statement read. Fatawu, who joined Ipswich from Leicester City in July for £20m on a five-year contract, has made five appearances this season. The abuse has sparked widespread condemnation on social media, with many fans and pundits expressing their outrage.

The Ipswich fan group Reach Tractors, which celebrates diversity within the club's supporter base, also condemned the abuse. "We're disgusted by reports of racial abuse directed at Abdul Fatawu," they said. "Racism has no place in football or society. Everyone at Reach Tractors stands firmly with Abdul." The group called for those responsible to be held accountable.

Fatawu, who has 32 caps for Ghana and scored three goals, featured in all four of his country's games at the 2026 World Cup, including against England in the group stage. His red card against Everton was a rare low point in an otherwise promising start to his Ipswich career. The club's swift response underscores the ongoing battle against discrimination in football.
