Bellamy Shuns Burnley to Stay Committed to Wales

Craig Bellamy has reaffirmed his commitment to Wales after rejecting an approach from Burnley, stating it was his own choice to remain as head coach. The 47-year-old held talks with the Championship club over their managerial vacancy following their relegation from the Premier League. The Football Association of Wales had granted permission for the discussions after Burnley triggered a compensation clause in June.

Bellamy described the interest as flattering but insisted he was comfortable turning down a return to club football. "I had a decision to make and I made it," he said. "It didn't break down. I said no, it's not for me." He emphasised that his family and his desire to lead Wales at a home European Championship in 2028 were key factors in his decision.

The former striker, who replaced Rob Page in 2024 on a four-year deal, faced questions about his future for the first time since the summer speculation. Despite guiding Wales to an unbeaten promotion to Nations League A, criticism arose after the team missed out on the 2026 World Cup via a penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia-Herzegovina in the play-offs.

Bellamy acknowledged the volatility of management but reiterated his ambition to be in charge for Euro 2028. "Oh, I'd love to – but that's two years from now. Nothing's guaranteed," he said. His immediate focus is on the upcoming Nations League matches against Portugal, Denmark, and Norway, where Wales will be tested by higher-ranked opposition.
