FIFA Hands Down Heavy Sanctions to Argentina After World Cup Final Chaos

FIFA's disciplinary committee has delivered a stern verdict on Argentina's conduct following their 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final. Midfielder Leandro Paredes, who plays for Boca Juniors, has been suspended for ten international matches, while defender Nahuel Molina faces a seven-game ban for his part in the post-match melee at New York New Jersey Stadium.

The sanctions extend beyond individual players. The Argentine Football Association has been fined $321,000 for multiple breaches of the disciplinary code, including the use of a sports event for non-sporting demonstrations and discriminatory chants from supporters. Notably, half of that fine is suspended, with $100,000 earmarked for anti-discrimination initiatives and another $100,000 conditional on future conduct.

The disciplinary action follows the Argentina squad's controversial banner claiming sovereignty over the Falkland Islands after their semi-final win over England. FIFA's prosecutor was appointed last month to investigate the incidents, which saw Paredes grab Eric Garcia by the throat and wrestle Gavi to the ground, while coaching staff member Roberto Ayala struck Dani Olmo.

Argentina has announced it will appeal the sanctions, with the Court of Arbitration for Sport as a potential next step. The bans apply only to international fixtures, allowing players to continue their club careers. Gavi and Thiago Almada each received one-match suspensions, highlighting FIFA's determination to address what it views as a tarnishing of the sport's showcase event.
